Agios Dimitrios church of Thessaloniki

The Church of Saint Demetrius is one of the most important and respected Christian churches in Thessaloniki and is a central point of reference for the religious and cultural history of the city. History

The original temple was built in the 4th century AD. above the Roman baths where, according to tradition, Saint Demetrius was martyred. The temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times during its history, with major reconstructions taking place in the 7th century and after the earthquake of 620 AD.

During the period of the Ottoman Empire, the temple was converted into a mosque, but was restored as a Christian temple after the liberation of the city in 1912. In 1917, the temple was severely damaged by the Thessaloniki fire, but was restored with attention to detail and to its original form.

Architecture

The church is a five-aisled basilica with a transversal aisle, a rare architectural form for its time. Its large facade and elaborate decorative elements, both inside and outside, reflect the rich Byzantine architecture and art.

Mosaics and Murals

One of the most notable features of the temple are its mosaics and frescoes. The surviving 5th and 7th century mosaics depict Saint Demetrius in various scenes and are excellent examples of Byzantine art. Crypt

Under the main church is the crypt, where according to tradition, Saint Demetrius suffered martyrdom. The crypt has been converted into a museum that houses exhibits from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods, offering visitors a glimpse into the history and religious significance of the temple.

Saint Demetrius is the patron saint of Thessaloniki and his temple is a center of worship for the faithful. Every year, on October 26, the feast day of Saint Demetrius, large religious ceremonies and litanies are held, attracting thousands of believers from all over Greece and abroad.
